WHAT IS COACHING PSYCHOLOGY?

OUR PRACTICE

Coaching Psychology practitioners use theory and activities from clinical, sport and organisational psychology to focus clients on the present and achieve future goals

Coaching Psychology uses proactive, results focused, and client centered activities that encourage sustainable change through new ways of thinking.

Coaching psychology has evolved over the last 20 years as a new domain of psychology. Initially seen as a purely traditional corporate leadership development activity, a coaching psychology practitioner supplements mental health practitioners to develop and support clients.

Coaching psychology practitioners are in high demand and work with corporate clients across all industries and private clients seeking wise counsel for confidential conversations. Depending on the client’s specific needs, we use a range of leadership and psychological theory and practices that explore issues and implement goal focused interventions.

Coaching Psychology practitioners have Masters level qualifications in Coaching Psychology such as the University of Sydney's School of Psychology. Other international universities offering Coaching Psychology specialisation include University of East London (UK), University of Reading (UK), University College Cork (Ireland), Instituto Superior Europeo de Barcelona (Spain) and University of Missouri (US).

Our Associates are qualified and experienced coaches, most with Masters in Coaching Psychology. We have a collaborative practice and also work with clinical and organisational psychologists, counsellors and qualified and accredited professional coaches.

Coaching psychology sessions assist individuals and teams to:

  • Establish and take action towards achieving goals

  • Become more self-reliant

  • Gain more job and life satisfaction

  • Contribute more effectively to the team and the organisation

  • Take greater responsibility and accountability for actions and commitments

  • Work more easily and productively with others (boss, direct reports, peers, family)

  • Communicate more effectively

What is Cognitive Behavioural Coaching (CBC)?

Cognitive behavioural Coaching is based on the methodology of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (as used in clinical settings) however it is used by coaching psychology practitioners when working with non-clinical groups.

It is an integrative approach combining cognitive, behavioural, imaginal and problem-solving techniques and strategies within a cognitive behavioural framework to enable clients to achieve their realistic goals. CBC is time-limited, goal-directed and encourages clients to focus on self-awareness of thinking and the impact of moods and emotions. It improves performance, increases psychological resilience, enhances well-being, prevents stress, and helps to overcome blocks to change.

What is Positive Psychology Coaching?

Positive psychology is focused on working through understanding what makes people flourish. We use a range of tools and strategies based on cognitive and behavioural thought patterns that change negative thinking patterns to achieve goals. It is a suitable construct for coaching through all situations to achieve peak performance. Please see our Tools page for some positive psychology measures.

We use a range of techniques and tools for:

  1. Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment.

  2. Interpersonal effectiveness and Intrapersonal awareness.

  3. Strengths, Wellbeing, Mindset, Resilience, Positive Relationships and Growth

What is the difference between Coaching Psychology, Psychological therapy or Coaching?

  • Coaching Psychology is a domain of psychology that use theories and evidence of the psychological mechanisms of human functioning. Practitioners focus on future behaviours to facilitate learning, development, growth, skill sets, performance and/or levels of wellbeing. The British Psychological Society identified Coaching Psychology as a domain in 2021, recently commencing registration for individuals with Masters in Coaching Psychology as Coaching Psychologists in September 2022. The Australian Psychological Society and AHPRA have not yet announced a registration process.

  • Psychologists and Counsellors use therapeutical interventions to prevent and treat psychological problems associated with thinking patterns thoughts, feelings and behaviours. They work with clients suffering mental health conditions and disorders, including dealing with issues arising from past traumatic events and experiences. In Australia psychologists and counsellors are regulated by AHPRA and registered with APS, ACA and other relevant bodies.

  • Coaching can be career, life or health focused with the aim of training or instructing an individual or a group how to develop skills to enhance their productivity or overcome a performance problem. Coaching is currently self-regulated within Australia. Anyone can call themselves a coach and it is up to the consumer to determine acceptable qualifications and experience. There are no mandatory qualification or membership requirements although individuals can apply for membership with the International Coaching Federation or other relevant member bodies.
